Anxiety is a common feeling and most people feel is occasionally. At times it can have a positive effect if it is mild eg. Someone who is mildly anxious about meeting a deadline will then make sure that they prepare for it and not put it off anymore. However, anxiety is not a positive thing when it gets to a level where it negatively affects your day to day activities; it can make your life feel very difficult and create feelings of unhappiness and frustration.
Symptoms Of Anxiety
- Increased heart rate. ‘heart pounding’
- Redness or blushing
- Feeling nauseous
- Racing thoughts
- Chest pain
Types Of Anxiety
Anxiety can either feel as if it is there all the time without there being a clear trigger; this is called generalized anxiety. Alternatively people can feel anxious about specific things, like a fear of social situations or of having to speak in public. There are also specific anxieties called phobias. Two common and well known phobias are claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces) agoraphobia (fear of public or open spaces) but there are many more such as fear of spiders, fear of choking, fear of being alone, fear of needles and injections and so on.
People with can also experience panic attacks. This is a severe anxiety attack that often happens suddenly and without any warning. The person often feels some or all the symptoms above. Sometimes there is a feeling that they are about to faint or collapse. Panic attacks can be very frightening as often people misinterpret them as an indication that there is something physically very wrong with them.
Treatment Of Anxiety
A person can be helped by anti anxiety medication prescribed by their GP. They can also benefit from some form of talking therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, counselling or others. It is hard to say what kind of treatment is the best until you have discussed this with a therapist and decided what mode of therapy suits you best.
